Frequently Asked Questions

How do I place an order? TOP

I aim to provide a friendly, honest and reliable service for customers to buy with confidence!

ORDER ONLINE - by clicking the ORDER button alongside each product and the VIEW CART/CHECKOUT button to see what goodies are in your basket and to complete your order when you have finished shopping. You can do this even if you don not wish to actually pay online.
PAY BY CHEQUE - select CHEQUE on the checkout page as your payment method at checkout for this option, (make cheques payable to K CUMING) and pop it in the post after placing your order.
PAY ONLINE - by selecting the card option at checkout.

I am only available to answer customer queries on Monday to Thursday so apologies if there is a delay answering your queries!

About the checkout / payment pages....
All payments go through a secure server.
Once you have filled out your name, address, etc you will be asked how you want to pay. The option to pay by credit card or direct cash payment are both carried out by paypal. You don't have to have a paypal account to do this, paypal is just used as a 'secure payment gateway' so to speak. This is why you are transferred to a secure paypal page on your screen, it will then let you choose. If you are a paypal customer you can transfer money direct from your own bank account OR if you are'nt a customer you can safely enter your credit / debit card details to make a payment. There is no charge for this, and they won't store your card details. Fairysteps pay the charges for them to do the transaction not the customer.

Is there a shop where I can try on FAIRYSTEPS items? TOP

I am afraid not!
I run an internet only business... and fairy shoemakers are rather shy beings!
The online shop has been set up to allow customers to do everything but touch the goods BUT hopefully the pictures are so good you wont feel you have to!
My workshop address is not set up to recieve customers, I hope you understand!!

Do you sell overseas? TOP

Fairysteps sells worldwide.
BUT remember, you may be liable to pay duty tax on reciept of your parcel! Please check before ordering as Fairysteps is not liable to pay these fees.

I want to learn how to make shoes, will you show me? TOP

I have been asked this a thousand times.....
All I can say is this... believe in what you can teach yourself. The greatest teacher on earth is YOU! If you can embrace that knowledge then there is no end to how many wondrous things you can learn.
I taught myself how to make shoes and have enjoyed every minute of it!
There are some wonderful books on making shoes out there. Many are out of print but if you look hard you will find them. Try a search on www.amazon.co.uk or for second hand books try www.abebooks.co.uk put in key words like making shoes, and shoemaking.
For leather suppliers, again do a search on Google, type in leather merchants.
Im sorry that I have turned away so many students who have asked to come and learn from me, I just cant offer that with the often erratic hours I work... I mean who wants to learn at  midnight!!!

I like a shoe style but want to order a different colour than those offered? TOP

Im so sorry, but ONLY the colours shown on the product descriptions are available for Made to Order footwear. I used to offer about 30 different colours and it became far too much to hold in stock! It also became increasingly difficult for customers to choose. By adopting a 'less is more' policy I hope to alleviate the colour struggle for both customers and myself!!
The select colour range has been chosen specifically to offer basic colours which will compliment a well stocked wardrobe!
Lots of you will be pleased by this, others crestfallen, I'm a rotter, sorry!

Making sure STOCK SHOES fit... TOP

If you have found a pair of shoes or boots on the stock shoes page that you like you will need to take a few measurements to see if they will fit! Follow the instructions below carefully!

WIDEST PART measurement.
This picture shows how to take the top measurement which tells you your WIDEST PART measurement.
Simply measure over the foot at the widest part (not around the foot) touching the tape onto the floor at each side. The widest part should be from the base of the little toe joint to the base of the big toe joint.
Do not pull the tape tight!
INSTEP measurement.
The instep is roughly halfway along your foot, take the measurement just like you did above for the widest part. Not all styles ask for or state this measurement.
ANKLES some shoe styles, like IVY and boot styles will ask for an ankle measuement. Just measure around your ankle (just above the bone at about 10cms from the floor).
BOOTS - measure around the ankle at 10cms from the floor, again at 15cms, again at 20cms around the calf, and lastly at 25cms, phew!

Remember leather does give with wear. Some styles such as slip ons and faeflips will need to be initially snug to allow for this. Take this into account when sizing up! Any queries, drop me a line by following the contact link.

Good luck!

How are the bags made? Specifications... TOP

Before you buy you a Fairysteps bag you may like to know the following....
  • Unless stated otherwise on the item descriptions the bags have unlined interiors. Interiors are clean and are basically the reverse side of the leather hide. I used to spend an age lining bags.... why, I began to wonder? The most hard wearing material was right in front of me and required no extra covering!! Lined bags can become tatty with use, unlined bags become worn and loved! The interiors simply need an occasional brushing to clean. Simple!
  • Handles are all stitched firmly into place, with the larger models having extra security with riveted bases. Most handles are unlined and topstitched for extra strength.
  • Usually the bags have one interior compartment (Im not keen on interior pockets getting in the way) but most have exterior pockets for purses and mobiles. I often place these beneath the front flap for added security, but sometimes I will place a mobile pocket on the back of a bag.
  • Bag closures are made using quality fittings.
  • The Rag Tag Wild Wood bags are made using the raw edge of the hide. Only selected leathers can be used for this rather beautiful feature so each one is unique and special! They have a wonderfully organic feel to them!
  • If buttons are a feature of a bag then the place where they are fixed will be lined on the reverse to cover the stitching used to fasten them. It keeps it all tidy and ensures the buttons stay safely in place. I rather like buttons and they often feature on Fairysteps bags....
  • All of the bags, both from the Wildwood and Dotty Spotty collections are exclusively designed, made and sold by Fairysteps. You can't buy them anywhere else on or off the Planet!
  • I love making bags....
