Taking measurements
When you order a pair of FAIRYSTEPS you will need to send me a drawing of each of your feet. A couple of measurements will need to be marked on the drawings together with a few order details. Your shoes will be made to these measurements and drawings so accuracy is important! Follow the instructions on this page carefully, it may help to keep this page open whilst taking measurements or to print it off.
REPEAT CUSTOMER? - I keep all of your drawings....forever! Unless you have gained or lost a significant amount of weight (we can but dream....), you want sandals rather than boots,or it has been longer than 1 year since your last order, then there will be no need to do repeat drawings when you order.
EXPECTANT MOTHERS - I advise waiting till a few months after your babies delivery before ordering. Fluid retention, etc can do strange things to your foot size, all of which should return to normal after delivery!
'PROBLEM' feet? - Please see the SPECIAL ORDERS heading on the INFORMATION page!
INGREDIENTS & METHOD:
You will need - 2 sheets of A4 paper (plain white please!), a sharp pencil, a dressmakers cloth tape measure, a friend or fairy helper.
-
1. Stand on a sheet of A4 paper and holding your pencil upright, draw around the foot. As you can see in the picture you will need to follow the contours of the actual foot so the drawing will look very misshapen (this is normal). It is best to be barefoot for sandal & shoe styles BUT wear thin socks for boot styles & shoes that you plan to wear socks with only. Please stand up tall, balancing your weight evenly on your feet and let your friend do this for you!
-
2. This is the tickly bit! Slant your pencil in under the little hollow on the inside of your foot. This is called the arch, don't worry if you make several lines here, just go backwards and forwards a few times as far in as there is space to do so. This mark will show me where your ball joint is and the general shape of your foot.
TOE POST STYLES ONLY: Insert the pencil between your big toe and second toe and mark the base of this gap for positioning the toe post.
-
3. The picture above shows how to take the top measurement which tells me how wide to make your shoes. Simply measure over the foot at the widest part (not around the foot) touching the tape onto the floor at each side. The widest part should be from the base of the little toe joint to the base of the big toe joint. Mark this position clearly on the drawing. Do not pull the tape tight!
-
4. I need you to measure over the instep next. The instep is roughly halfway along your foot, take the measurement just like you did above for the widest part. As before mark it on the drawing.
-
SANDALS - measure across the toes as well please!
I prefer you to use metric measurements as each millimetre is important! This measurement will be different on each foot.
ANKLES I also need to know if you have a wide or narrow ankle, so just measure around your ankle (just above the bone) and make a note on the drawing by the heel.
BOOTS ONLY - measure around the ankle at 10cms from the floor, again at 15cms, again at 20cms (stop here unless these are tall boots) around the calf, and lastly at 25cms, phew!
name & address
date
shoe / boot style name
leather colour / soling choice
which foot you've drawn L or R
'widest part' & 'instep' measurements (across the toes as well for Sandals)
ankle & leg measurements if applicable
This is what your finished foot drawing will look like. The main outline that you made with the upright pencil in STEP 1. is very lumpy and odd looking! Don't worry if your drawing looks like a big long blob, its going to be the same as everyone else's!
Full instructions about 'fitting and give' will be sent with your completed order. Remember the shoes can be returned for a refund (excluding postage costs) if they do not, for any reason fit.
WHAT SIZES DO YOU CATER FOR?
FAIRYSTEPS are available for men and women in size 3 to 12. Just in case any of you men are rather shy about having the word 'fairy' printed inside your boot I use a more discreet FS or WOODZIE stamp for size 9 to 12.
OVERSEAS CUSTOMERS
I am happy to make footwear for overseas customers!
There are size conversion tables on the internet which will offer an approximate guide for customers wishing to order, BUT don't worry too much about the size as I will be making your shoes from your foot drawings and the measurements that you will be sending me in the post. The correct size number is not important, your drawings and measurements are!!
Don't forget to take all of the measurements above + your foot drawings AND allow a little extra time for the post!
