Latest makes & studio plans

Ren Cuming

I've been a busy bee in the workshop, between plum picking, dressmaking, melting in the heat and general everyday chores. Isn't the summer both wonderful, yet exhausting all at once! Its been very sad to see nature struggling this year :/ I am secretly yearning for Autumn... but one must never wish time away.

Taking a break from made-to-order has been a godsend so I am grateful that I made that difficult decision to pause - it has given me space to reflect on the direction of Fairysteps. I make too much for my own good sometimes so a slower pace is a relief.

In other news...

I have plans for a new dressmaking studio so thats been exciting! The room I am going to use is south facing with lots of light. Previously used as a small kitchen which isn't ideal but I will keep the sink as that may be useful for tea ;) the kitchen cupboards can be disguised and used as storage, the wall cupboards can have doors removed, doctored up with trim and be used as bookshelves, white melamine so serious prep needed on these. The cooker will be removed. It was last decorated in the late 1980s so say no more... I am afraid I wasnt keen on 1980s decor, but I'm a great believer that paint can transform any room into any era, so I am determined to give it a thorough makeover with all existing furniture from the 1980s and 1940s - my theme is Victorian Haberdashery. Dark and rich. It's going to either look fabulous and inspirational every time I enter, or fail miserably and cause avoidance coupled with a nervous twitch. I'm rooting for the former ;)

I shall post transformation pictures here once complete :) very excited. Sounds wonderful on paper, just got to find the energy...

Ever Yours, Ren x
